The Unit, Medium, My Name Is Earl Canceled
May 19th, 2009 | 33 Comments | Email | Share | TweetCBS has canceled long-running Sunday night action-drama The Unit while NBC has canceled Thursday night comedy mainstay My Name Is Earl and the supernatural Medium. But not all is lost for two of the shows.
My Name Is Earl studio 20th TV is talking to Fox and ABC about possibly picking up the show. ABC in particular has been receptive to picking up rival shows, having taken Scrubs after NBC canceled the series last year and committing to take on The New Adventures of Old Christine should CBS cancel the series.
Medium has drawn interest from another network as well. CBS is interested in picking up the drama and pairing it with Ghost Whisperer on Friday nights.
CBS cancelled The Unit?. Idiots. Guess they don’t care what 10 million ex-viewers think about them.

I absolutely agree with you United and all who love “The Unit”. I’m a “House” fan, but I think the writing, the surprise story lines, the actors, and the filming of “The Unit” is superior. Both are extremely well written and acted, but Fox isn’t cancelling House yet. The writers will probably give up before they cancel the Show. Anyway, back to “The Unit” – all of the guys are babes for one and fantastic actors along with The woman in the Show. It’s just an interesting topic and present that never gets old and keeps delivering. It’s totally unpredictable. I’ve only seen a few episodes, and I now want to rent / buy Seasons 2006 – 2008. C’mon; CBS has always been about Quality since its founding by Wiliam S. Paley. How can any Studio Executive not know the value of this Show,and in their right mind cancel David Mamet, about the best Writer, not just for Screen, in the World. Amazing! CBS should be ashamed of themselves. This is an afront to the good taste of Wiliam S. Paley’s life, memory and ideals. I hope that CBS has excellent Web Analytics and Social Media Tracking, because they are cancelling a Show that is viewed. Maybe they need to change the Shows day and time. It’s so much tamer than so many Shows. They never show torture or killing up close.
I can’t believe NBC cancelled Medium, it’s an awesome show!!! Hopefully, CBS will pick it up. Although I’m not a fan of Ghost Whisperer, I have never, nor will I ever, miss an episode of Medium!!!
The Unit is one of the best shows. Please don’t cancel it. Their is not too many good shows on.
Yanke – I agree with your comparison of Medium and Ghost Whisperer. Patricia Arquette is a seasoned, mature and believable Medium while Jennifer Love Hewitt, while cute and I’m sure nice, is a spirited cheerleader. Medium is good, but if I were CBS, I would look at the ratings for “The Unit” and “Medium” and decide that way. Maybe Medium is more widely watched, and I do think it is on a better day. I’ve only watched it a few times, but seriously enjoyed it every time.
I can’t beleive NBC is this dumb. What are they going to replace Earl with? (My name is Obama!)
I can’t believe Les Moonves of CBS won’t pick up King of the Hill from FOX, yet he’ll give a lifeline to Patricia Arquette’s cancelled NBC series Medium. Hey Les, how about throwing another lifeline over to My Name Is Earl in the event ABC, FOX and TBS all fail to pick up the Jason Lee sitcom? May karma bite NBC in the tush for years to come!
Medium can’t be cancelled. It is one of the only quality shows left these days, with everything good getting cancelled or going down the drain Medium has stayed up to par! I hope CBS picks up the series!
I am such a devoted fan of Medium and will watch it no matter what channel it’s on. NBC is truly LOST for canceling Medium. If the network thinks reality shows are a better bet..Reality shows a dime a dozen and I don’t watch them.

Why would you cancel a great show like The Unit? It is the only show that me and my wife watch together because it not only show the life of a Soldier (I can relate because I am one!) but it show what the families must endure also. CBS is making a terrible mistake. Hopefully another network will pick it up and show how dumb the execs at CBS really are!!

Why would you cancel a great show like The Unit? Do we really need all of these crime shows that are on? Three CIS shows is a little much!!! The Unit brought an essence of pride in our military and is a unique and well liked show. First Moonlight, now The Unit……guess I won’t be watching CBS anymore!!
The Unit shouldn’t have been canceled. Get rid of something else. The CSIs really aren’t that great. I vote one of them gets axed instead.
The Unit is absolutely the best show on television with Medium coming in a close second. I understand Medium got a reprieve but what about the Unit. Take some of that reality crap off and leave the good programs on. I don’t care if you can dance or not.
Television is getting worse and worse with the likes of “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here”. Right, get me out of here when that comes on.
The Unit is one show that shows some sort of support for our troops overseas. If we do not support a show like The Unit, then we have slapped our gallant men and women in the face. So the molgols that run CBS that sit on their fat behinds, get off them and bring The Unit back on the air or you will regret it ! DO IT NOW !!
Please renew The Unit, someone!! What an awesome show and a tribute to our hard working men and women in the military. Don’t they deserve a voice, too?!!

The writing in “The Unit” was some of the best writing for a television show that I can remember. David Mamet? He’s a genius! Every week, I felt as though I just sat through a two hour feature film! The actors were phenomenal, the filming was amazing, but the writing…I could never understand why this wasn’t nominated for an Emmy….PLEASE bring it back!!!
I am SO very angry at CBS for cancelling The Unit. What a bunch of idiots! One of the few shows that wasn’t a sitcom and they cancel it. I NEVER missed an episode. Here I was eagerly waiting for it to come back this fall and nothing! I watched The Ghost Whisperer for many years and finally it became so idiotic I couldn’t tolerate it anymore. The body change thing for the husband became the last straw. The Unit was like watching the action movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith week after week. I love Medium too, but not as much as I loved The Unit. I guess that’s why CBS has the initials CBS = (C)an’t (B)e (S)ensible. Yep, makes sense to me.

Cancelling the Unit is the worst mistake CBS has done in years! CBS should be cancelled for its stupidity. There are very few tv series worth watching and far too many reality shows that are a waste of time, such as “You think you can’t dance, Dancing in the Bars, etc. The writers do not need to go on strike, they need to be fired. Wake up CBS! Try producing something that is entertaining for a change.

CBS sucks for cancelling The Unit, maybe cancel some of the non-reality television. I have better things to do with my time than watch stupid people that want to be on television.
Why why why would you cancel The Unit? It was my favorite show on tv and I have not missed an episode from the very beginning. I even recorded all of them so my son and I could watch them together when he returned from Iraq. Bring it back please. There are plenty of really bad shows and The Unit was one of the VERY FEW good ones left.
I miss MY NAME IS EARL so much! It was a brilliant point in the prime time week. Thursdays pale without it. The Office is all alone now… and there’s very little reason to be home Thursday night or tune into NBC. I’m going to see a play this week. NBC can play what they want, I won’t be watching.
I am very disappointed that nbc would cancel My Name Is Earl. It was the funniest show I have watched in a long time. Now who has any reason the watch nbc on thursday night. Hopefully one of the other networks will pick up the series.
Will miss the unit. Show could have been better without some of the wife characters though. They weakened the show too much. Directors should have stayed with 80& action 20% homelife melodrama.
