TBS has given Tyler Perry’s House of Payne two orders for a total of 46 additional episodes, bringing the series’ number to 172. The cable network’s 26 and 20-episode orders suit House of Payne distributor Debmar-Mercury’s plan to quickly amass a large number of episodes for syndication.
The story of House of Payne, which has generated more than $250 million in revenue, began a few years ago when Perry approached Debmar-Mercury with a proposition: He would fund a new series if they would find a way to get it on television and get him his money back. Perry funded the production of 10 episodes, which Debmar-Mercury gave for free to local stations in key markets and to TBS’ WTBS Atlanta for a test run in summer 2006. An additional 90-episode order by TBS followed, and the series premiered on the cable network in June 2007, followed by a national broadcast-syndication launch in September 2008.

Despite interest from TBS to continue My Name Is Earl with new episodes, producing studio 20th Century Fox TV and creator-executive producer Greg Garcia have opted not to move forward after examining all the cuts they had to make in order to produce the broadcast series for cable network TBS.
“Greg Garcia’s brilliant ‘My Name Is Earl’ kept America laughing for the past four seasons and certainly deserved to continue for many more,” 20th TV said in a statement Thursday.

TBS is in preliminary talks to order 13 new episodes of My Name Is Earl. The show was recently canceled by NBC. My Name Is Earl became one of the highest-profile cancellations this season. After it was canceled speculation arose that the series, which has won five Emmys, would find another home either on TBS or Fox.
A deal for new episodes of My Name Is Earl is still a long shot as the two sides have to figure out if an expensive network single-camera series can be produced under a basic cable network’s economic model. Also, while they’re still under a hold, the show’s cast has yet to be lined up for a lower-budget reincarnation of the series at TBS.

Terminator Salvation is headed to TNT as part of a 13-title Warner Brothers movie package nabbed by the network and TBS. The deal also includes recent openers Watchmen and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Gran Torino and three upcoming releases: The Hangover, The Informant and Sherlock Holmes.
TNT and TBS have acquired exclusive TV rights to the 13 movies, which will begin airing on the cable networks about 30 months after their U.S. releases. Terminator Salvation is looking at an end-of-2011 network debut. The license fee for the films is tied to their box office performance and expected to average 10%-12% of their domestic grosses. After seven days in theaters, Terminator Salvation has amassed $69 million. Depending on how the movie does at the box office, it would earn $15 million-$24 million from TNT.
