ABC Signs Braff, Preparing Scrubs For Ninth Season

ABC is preparing to bring Scrubs back to television for a ninth season. The network has signed the main cast members to return for the new season. Zach Braff has signed a deal to come back for six episodes to transition the show to its new set-up, which is still being worked out. Also signed for six episodes is Sarah Chalke.

Donald Faison, John C. McGinley and Neil Flynn have signed deals to continue as regulars in second position to their pilots. Faison and Flynn co-star in ABC pilots, The Law and The Middle, respectively. McGinley is on CBS’ drama pilot Back. Judy Reyes has not been approached for a deal but may appear as a guest star if “Scrubs” is renewed.

ABC In Talks To Bring Scrubs Back For Ninth Season

ABC is in talks to renew the veteran comedy Scrubs for a ninth season with some or all of the original cast members coming back full- or part-time. Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is said to be deeply involved in the renewal talks as well as in the discussions with the cast, who don’t have deals beyond the show’s current eighth season.

Last summer, Lawrence and ABC chief Stephen McPherson indicated that they were looking into a way to keep Scrubs going with new cast members, similar to NBC’s ER. This season, the show integrated a new crop of interns.

ABC Renews Key Shows For 2009-2010 Season

ABC has announced early pick-ups for the 2009-10 season to its top primetime performers. The network renewed key series including Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters and Private Practice. ABC also renewed Lost, which had already been given a go-ahead and will now complete its final season next year.

In a show of confidence, Ugly Betty also got the go ahead for another season. Samantha Who still remains on the bubble, although insiders believe the show will ultimately get another season on air. The pickups make it season six for Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost. It’s the fourth season for Brothers and Sisters and Ugly Betty, coming close to qualifying both shows for off-network syndication. Private Practice is entering its third year.

ABC Announces Date Of Scrubs Season/Series Finale

Scrubs will end for the season, and possibly for good, with an hour-long episode in May. ABC has scheduled the episode, fittingly titled My Finale, for Tuesday, May 6.

Series creator Bill Lawrence has said the finale will deal with J.D. (Zach Braff) deciding to leave Sacred Heart Hospital and take a job closer to his son.
