Scrubs has officially promoted Eliza Coupe to a series regular according to Michael Ausiello. Creator Bill Lawrence recently hinted that Coupe’s insensitive intern, Denise, would play an integral part in next season’s medical school setting. Coupe joins an ensemble that will include three or four new regulars in addition to Donald Faison and John C. McGinley. Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes and Ken Jenkins are expected to make guest appearances.

Josh Bycel is joining Scrubs as the show’s new executive producer. Bycel will serve as a showrunner alongside creator Bill Lawrence, who will be busy doing double duty as he launches his new comedy Cougar Town.
Bycel joins the show as it undergoes a major storyline shift. The show is expected to move away from the hospital to a medical school where Donald Faison’s Turk and John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox will be teaching. As part of the transition, series star Zach Braff is back next season for at least six episodes, while other cast members may make appearances as well. But the show will also be populated by a new cast of interns next season.

Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment Group, outlined ABC’s plans for next season and unveiled the network’s 2009-10 fall schedule before the advertising and media communities at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. New fall and midseason series include Cougar Town, The Deep End, Eastwick, Flash Forward, The Forgotten, Hank, Happy Town, The Middle, Modern Family, Shark Tank and V.
Better Off Ted, Castle, Scrubs and True Beauty join previously announced returning series America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Brothers and Sisters, Dancing with the Stars, Desperate Housewives, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Private Practice, Supernanny, Ugly Betty, Wife Swap and 20/20.

ABC has officially renewed Scrubs for a ninth season. The move comes right after ABC Studios signed most of the main cast members who had no deals beyond the current eighth season, the show’s first on ABC after a seven-year run on NBC. ABC and creator Bill Lawrence had said they envision the show continuing with a mix of original cast members and some of the interns introduced this past season.
