The nominations in the major category were announced early Thursday morning by Parsons and Chandra Wilson of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy who were joined by the chairman of the Academy of TV Arts and Sciences John Shaffner.
Fox hit Family Guy became the first animated series in nearly 50 years, and the second ever, to land a best comedy series nomination, following The Flintstones in 1961.
Seven half-hours made it in to the best comedy series category, with two more first-timers, HBO’s offbeat The Flight of the Conchords, CBS’ often overlooked How I Met Your Mother and Showtime’s veteran Weeds. They will compete against defending champ 30 Rock, previous winner The Office and HBO’s Entourage.

ABC has canceled the Christina Applegate series Samantha Who. According to an insider close to the show, decision to scrap the show came down to numbers. The show couldn’t cut it’s budget enough to make a third-season pickup work. ABC had been thinking about moving to multiple cameras, rather than the single camera now used to decrease the budget. ABC was looking to trim as much as $500,000 per episode from the show’s budget.
The show became expendable once ABC picked up ten new series for next year. With so many new series, it no longer made sense to bring Samantha Who back or promote it. The show was initially a strong performer for the network on Monday nights, but faltered this season after moving to Thursdays.

ABC has announced early pick-ups for the 2009-10 season to its top primetime performers. The network renewed key series including Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters and Private Practice. ABC also renewed Lost, which had already been given a go-ahead and will now complete its final season next year.
In a show of confidence, Ugly Betty also got the go ahead for another season. Samantha Who still remains on the bubble, although insiders believe the show will ultimately get another season on air. The pickups make it season six for Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost. It’s the fourth season for Brothers and Sisters and Ugly Betty, coming close to qualifying both shows for off-network syndication. Private Practice is entering its third year.

ABC is pulling In the Motherhood and Samantha Who from the schedule a week earlier than planned. Ugly Betty will return to the schedule on Thursday, April 30 at 8 pm. Ugly Betty was originally slated to return on May 7. In The Motherhood and Samantha Who continue to pull in poor ratings in their Thursday slot. This past week, In The Motherhood averaged just a 1.4 rating and 5 share in the adults 18-49 demo, while Samantha Who posted a 1.5/5. Those weak lead-in numbers could have caused a ratings slide for Grey’s Anatomy at 9 pm.
