A soldier leads evacuees through a stargate onto an unknown, but somewhat familiar spacecraft in the debut of the third series in the Stargate franchise. In the debut, a pop-culture geek scores his ticket to ride by cracking a code in a video game. Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks turn up to pass the torch.

Disney/ABC, Hearst and NBC Universal announced Thursday an agreement for A&E to acquire Lifetime Entertainment Services. The confirmation of the long-rumored purchase puts Abbe Raven, president and CEO of A&E, in charge of the combined company following the closing of the deal, which is expected to occur this year. Lifetime president and CEO Andrea Wong will continue to head Lifetime and report to Raven.

Lifetime has ordered a second season of Drop Dead Diva. The network has ordered 13 new episodes of the freshman series, from Sony TV, creator Josh Berman and executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, to air in 2010. Drop Dead Diva, which premiered in July as Lifetime’s best original drama series debut since the 2007 launch of Army Wives, has become the first scripted series since to earn a second-season pickup. It has averaged 2.6 million viewers, hitting series highs in the women demos last Sunday when the series, about a dead shallow model reincarnated in the body of a brilliant plus-size attorney, drew more than 3 million total viewers.

Drop Dead Diva (Lifetime)
Liza Minnelli and Delta Burke are set to play dueling sisters on Lifetime’s upcoming legal dramedy. On the show, which premieres July 12, Minnelli plays a psychic who takes her sister (Burke) to court after she opens a competing psychic shop directly across the street from her store. Their episode airs September 20.
