King of the Hill will finish its 13 season run on Fox with an hour-long finale. Fox executives had indicated last week during the Television Critics Association press tour that they would not air any more new episodes of the animated series. The finale is scheduled to air September 13 at 8:00 PM/ET. This leaves four new episodes that Fox is leaving in the can, with no plans of airing. Hopefully, they will start releasing the remaining seasons on DVD.

ABC wanted to premiere King of the Hill creator Mike Judge’s new animated show The Goode Family in mid-season and would like to pair King of the Hill with The Goode Family. But the problem is that new episodes of King of the Hill won’t be ready until next fall due to the long production process. ABC has to choose between premiering The Goode Family solo in mid-season or delaying The Goode Family until next fall and premiere both shows together.
ABC is trying to convince Fox to give up its remaining final season King of the Hill episodes so ABC can air the show with The Goode Family together in mid-season. ABC is supposedly making Fox a fair offer. And Fox could premiere new animated comedy Sit Down Shut Up in mid-season in the King of the Hill time slot. So giving up the remaining King of the Hill episodes might not be so bad. But the move is still seen as doing ABC and Mike Judge a favor.

Adult Swim has grabbed exclusive cable rerun rights to the animated series, King of the Hill, which recently was canceled by Fox after 13 seasons. Although ABC has expressed interest in reviving the show, Adult Swim said it has no plans to order new episodes of the series from producer 20th Century Fox TV. But all is not lost for new episodes of King of the Hill. Adult Swim played a part in bringing animated series Family Guy”back to life on Fox after the network canceled it in 2002.
Based on solid performances for repeats on Adult Swim as well as strong DVD sales, Fox was encouraged enough to resurrect the series in 2005. Adult Swim, the late-night sibling of Cartoon Network, also said that it will be expanding its programming by an hour starting in January. The network currently airs from 11 p.m.-6 a.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 p.m.-6 a.m. Sunday but will begin broadcasting at 10 p.m. seven days a week. To kick off the new hour, King of the Hill will air at 10 p.m. nightly starting in January. Adult Swim’s multiyear deal includes all episodes of the series. FX currently airs King of the Hill repeats, but its deal with distributor Twentieth TV ends in December.

ABC is looking to add King of the Hill to the lineup to compliment Mike Judge produced The Goode Family, an animated comedy series lined up for a midseason premiere. A spokesman for producer 20th Century Fox TV would only confirm that “another network is interested” in the show. ABC had no comment, and there is no deal is in place.
While a possible pairing of King of the Hill and The Goode Family would make a lot of sense for ABC, creating a Judge animated block could be logistically difficult. King of the Hill takes nine months to produce new episodes because of the animation work involved. So while The Goode Family is slated for midseason, “King” wouldn’t be ready until the fall. If ABC orders the show and The Goode Family flops, the network would be left with an expensive half-hour animated show with no partner in the fall. ABC might just opt for a script order, which would getting the ball rolling on another King of the Hill season while leaving the network time to test The Goode Family on the air.
Another option for King of the Hill is to move to cable. But between cost of the show’s animation and voice talent, the show is considered pricey and likely too rich for a network like Cartoon Network’s programming block Adult Swim.

Fox has chosen not to renew King of the Hill beyond its current 13th season. In April, Fox picked up 13 more episodes from the show, which are wrapping production. A lot has changed since “King of the Hill” premiered in 1997. Its creators Greg Daniels and Mike Judge have moved on to other projects – Daniels developed and is running NBC’s The Office, and Judge has a new animated series, The Goode Family, launching on ABC in midseason.
Judge had continued to voice the central character on the toon comedy, alongside voiceover cast members Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Brittany Murphy, Tom Petty, Johnny Hardwick and Stephen Root.
