Steven Weber is in talks to take over the lead role on ABC’s Happy Town. Weber would play John Haplin, whose family practically runs the city. He is obsessive and filled with agony over the disappearance of his daughter, kidnapped years ago by the Magic Man. Weber is replacing Dean Winters who played John Haplin in the pilot.
Additionally, Ben Schnetzer has signed on to take over another lead role. Schnetzer will replace John Patrick Amedori as Haplin’s son, a wealthy teenager entangled in a Romeo and Juliet-style romance. Happy Town is a mystery set in a small town rattled by the return of a serial kidnapper, known as the Magic Man.

Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment Group, outlined ABC’s plans for next season and unveiled the network’s 2009-10 fall schedule before the advertising and media communities at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. New fall and midseason series include Cougar Town, The Deep End, Eastwick, Flash Forward, The Forgotten, Hank, Happy Town, The Middle, Modern Family, Shark Tank and V.
Better Off Ted, Castle, Scrubs and True Beauty join previously announced returning series America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Brothers and Sisters, Dancing with the Stars, Desperate Housewives, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Private Practice, Supernanny, Ugly Betty, Wife Swap and 20/20.

ABC has picked up new drama Happy Town and the Courteney Cox-starring comedy Cougar Town, both from ABC Studios. Additionally, midseason drama Castle, also from ABC Studios, was renewed for a second season. ABC won’t confirm any pickups until it unveils its fall schedule on Tuesday.

Lyons will play the lead, an Iraq veteran who is a natural leader. Reuten will play an odd woman who keeps copious notes on other tenants. Pope will play a brilliant young woman who lives with her boyfriend, an MIT graduate and computer genius.

Absolutely Fabulous (Fox)
Zosia Mamet and Toni Trucks have been cast in Fox’s Absolutely Fabulous remake. Based on the British series, the show revolves around neurotic fashion publicist Eddie (Kathryn Hahn) and her best friend Patsy (Kristen Johnson), an outrageous fashion editor, who drive Eddie’s sensible teen daughter, Saffron (Mamet), up the wall with their wild behavior. Trucks will play Eddie’s assistant.
