Michael Ausiello is reporting that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is returning to Grey’s as Izzie’s late fiancé, in an episode to air later this season. And, since Denny’s ticker clearly tocked for the last time back in May, it seems safe to assume that he’ll appear in either a dream sequence or a newly created flashback.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who had a recurring role as an ill-fated heart patient on “Grey’s Anatomy,” has been hired as a regular on a new ABC project from the creator of the network’s hit medical drama. The untitled Shonda Rhimes project, about a group of female journalists, has a pilot order.
On “Grey’s,” Morgan played heart patient Denny Duquette. Duquette, who was romantically linked to Izzie (Katherine Heigl), died in the series’ recent second-season finale. Additionally, Morgan has recurring roles on WB Network’s series “Supernatural,” on which he plays the ghostbusting father of series stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, and on Showtime’s comedy “Weeds,” on which he plays star Mary Louise Parker’s deceased husband, who appears in flashbacks and fantasy sequences.

Despite the grim reaper’s frightful toll two weeks ago, some patients at Seattle Grace have survived, among them Denny, who survived his operation and got a kiss — on the mouth — from Izzie to boot. Speaking of boots, that’s what George might get from Burke, who has been putting him up (while Cristina has barely put up with him) since he left Meredith’s house. Maybe George can begin cuddling up with Callie (Sara Ramirez). Cuddling is something Meredith has been doing precious little of lately. But maybe the beginning of Chris O’Donnell’s stint on the show will change that. Mare Winningham guests.
