The CW Looking To Spin-Off Gossip Girl

December 5th, 2008 | 0 Comments

The CW wants to spin off its hit teen drama Gossip Girl next season. CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff said the network is in discussions with the show’s producers as to how a new show could be done. But she said nothing has been finalized and there’s no imminent announcement. “Nothing really tangible yet, but we’re talking about it,” Ostroff told the Hollywood Reporter after her speech at the WWD Style + Media conference in Manhattan.

“If it’s the right idea, we’d all embrace it and be enthusiastic,” Ostroff added. “But nobody more than executive producers Josh and Stephanie want to make sure there’s the right idea that they can wrap their arms around and really be excited about.” Gossip Girl is averaging 3.5 million viewers so far this season – its second – up from 2.7 million at the same point last year. The show, which revolves around privileged teens in Manhattan, stars Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Penn Badgley.

Laura Breckenridge (Related) is joining the cast of Gossip Girl as Rachel Carr says Michael Ausiello. Carr will play the idealistic and fresh-faced new English teacher at Constance Billard. At 25, Breckenridge – who is booked for a minimum of three episodes – is only a few years older than Blake Lively and Leighton Meester. And Gossip Girl producers are wisely acknowledging that right at the start when Miss Carr gets mistaken for a student on her first day.
