ABC Family has acquired the final season of Gilmore Girls. The network landed the seventh season in a deal with Warner Brothers Domestic TV Distribution and now has rights to all 153 episodes of the series. The final season is set to be rebroadcast on ABC Family in June. Gilmore Girls, which launched in 2000 and ran until May 2007, aired on the WB and CW. Many critics championed the show but it never received an Emmy nomination. The series, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and exec produced by David Rosenthal, starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel.

Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham is returing to primetime. ABC has given a production commitment to a new comedy starring Graham, who will play a self-help guru who teaches women how to live a stress-free life – but struggles to follow her own advice when her boyfriend dumps her. The untitled half-hour comes from scribe Alex Herschlag, who will executive produce along with Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Mitch Hurwitz. Hagada Hey and Tantamount will produce, while Sony Pictures TV is the studio. Graham will also serve as a producer on the sitcom.
The project is Graham’s first starring TV role since Gilmore Girls went off the air in 2007. She spent seven seasons on the show playing Loreli Gilmore. The new show is also a reunion between Lauren Graham and ABC. She got her big break on the network starring opposite Molly Ringwald and Jenna Elfman in the short-lived Townies.

Michael Ausiello tracked down Gilmore Girls’ creator Amy Sherman-Palladino at the Network Upfronts last week. He confronted her about the end of Gilmore Girls and the final four she wanted to end the series with. While not giving up those four works, Sherman-Palladino did drop a big piece of Gilmore news. She explained that she couldn’t reveal her version of the series’ ending because Gilmore Girls isn’t over yet. In the next year or two, she hopes to make a two-hour Gilmore Girls TV-movie that ties up all the loose ends that weren’t addressed in the series finale. Ausiello talked to Scott Patterson, Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham about the news and all three were positive about wanting to participate in the movie.

The CW announced that the May 15 season finale of Gilmore Girls will indeed be the series finale. Warner Brothers recently made one final offer to Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel that included sizeable salary increase for both in exchange for a shortened 13-episode season. That offer was rejected. The May 15 finale was meant to serve as either a series or season finale.
“Announcing the final season of ‘Gilmore Girls’ is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Brothers Television. This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television’s most memorable, lovable characters.
We thank Amy Sherman-Palladino, Dan Palladino, Dave Rosenthal, the amazing cast led by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as well as the producers, writers and crew for giving us this delightful gem for the past seven years.
We would also like to thank the critics and ‘Gilmore’ fans for their passionate support and promise to give this series the send off it deserves.”

Michael Ausiello is reporting that although all indications were that Warner Brothers and the CW were nearing a deal to bring Gilmore Girls back for a shortened eighth season, sources close to the negotiations now say that talks are at a complete standstill. “It’s anybody’s guess what’s going to happen,” reports a Gilmore mole. “There’s no deal in place at this point, and there may never be. This is probably going to come down to the wire.” The holdup can be summed up in five words: Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. According to the insider, “very good” offers were made to both actresses, but it apparently wasn’t enough to coax signatures out of them. “Now it’s a game of chess,” whispers the spy. “It could go either way.” Further complicating matters is the fact that the CW’s upfront presentation – the unoffical deadline for a deal to be brokered – is scheduled for May 17. That’s two days after the show’s potential swan song airs. In other words, if negotiations literally go down to the wire, we won’t know if we’re watching the season or series finale.
