NBC Orders More ER, Police From Producer John Wells

January 8th, 2009 | 1 Comment

It will be a longer goodbye for NBC’s veteran medical drama ER, whose 15th and final season has been extended by three episodes. NBC and executive producer John Wells had been talking about adding an additional three hours to the 19-episode final season of ER, which has performed well, regularly winning its 10 pm Thursday slot. It is not clear how the extra hours of ER will affect NBC’s new drama Kings, which was scheduled to air in the slot following the ER series finale March 12.

As part of NBC’s deal with Wells, the network also has ordered six episodes of Wells’ new cop drama Police. NBC and WBTV have been in intense negotiations during the past few weeks for a Police series pickup. The network had been asking for a 12-episode midseason order, while WBTV had been reluctant to commit to such a large order in light of NBC’s recent decision to launch a Jay Leno-fronted talk show in the 10 pm hour in the fall, which would limit the network’s needs for drama series. Ordered to pilot in June, Police is an ensemble show starring Tom Everett Scott, Regina King, Benjamin McKenzie and Kevin Alejandro as a group of police officers in Los Angeles. It’s executive produced by writer Ann Biderman, director Christopher Chulack and Wells.

Alex Kingston Returing To The ER One More Time

TV Guide is reporting that NBC has set an airdate for Alex Kingston’s return to ER as Dr. Mark Greene’s widow, Dr. Elizabeth Corday. Kingston, whose original ER run spanned seven seasons (from 1997 to 2004), will resurface in the January 15 episode, when Neela goes in for an attending interview and is surprised to run into Dr. Corday. Kingston’s is the latest encore confirmed for ER’s final season. Most recently, Anthony Edwards appeared as Mark (in flashbacks revolving around Angela Basset’s Dr. Cate Banfield). Also expected back during the medical drama’s final months are Noah Wyle and Eriq La Salle (though only as a director). ER’s series finale is set for March 12.

Michael Ausiello is reporting that Shannon Woodward, best known as Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver’s daughter on The Riches, is joining ER in the recurring role of Kelly, estranged younger sister of Linda Cardellini’s Sam. Kelly shows up on her sister’s doorstep with some news: she wants to move their ailing mother to Chicago so Sam can care for her for a change. What makes it worse is that fifteen years ago, Mom kicked a then-pregnant Sam out of the house with nothing but the clothes on her back, and the two haven’t spoken since.
