Disney And CBS Streaming Shows On NetFlix

September 24th, 2008 | 0 Comments

Disney and CBS have inked separate deals to show TV series including Hannah Montana and CSI on demand and commercial-free to Netflix subscribers says The Hollywood Reporter. The arrangements allow Netflix users to stream via the Internet some new shows 24 hours after they air as well as such older shows as MacGyver, Star Trek and Family Ties. In all, about 350 episodes from CBS will be available. Disney’s contribution includes 500 episodes from, among others, Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, The Replacements and new spinoff series The Suite Life on Deck. Disney’s ABC was not included in the deal.

Subscribers primarily will watch the shows on personal computers, though Netflix also has partnered with various consumer electronics companies that make boxes for putting Netflix’s streaming content on TV screens. A stand-alone box from Roku sells for $100 and similar technology is coming to Xbox game consoles and is being built into a Blu-ray player coming from LG Electronics. Streaming movies and TV shows is nothing new to Netflix, but content from CBS and Disney had not been available until now. Netflix has also struck deals with several movie studios but has shied away from expensive new releases because the economics of its model – no extra cost for streaming movies – limit such expenses.
