Scrubs Could Get Braff-less Ninth Season On ABC

Many entertainment sites are reporting that this is Zach Braff’s last season on Scrubs, and they are making a big deal about it. This was always supposed to be the last season of Scrubs. Creator Bill Lawrence has been saying that Scrubs could go on another season, and with ABC getting behind the show, ratings could improve enough to be reupped for another season. Braff said he is open to coming back as JD in a more limited role and to direct if the show made it to another season. Lawrence is saying he always saw Scrubs as a comedy version of ER with people rotating in and out of the show.

Lawrence wrote the finale a few years ago and was very upset when NBC wouldn’t give him the chance to wrap up his show. “The end of the show will be about J.D. leaving the hospital,” Lawrence said. “When you leave, it’s about holding on to your relationships.” ABC came in and gave Lawrence that chance, giving him the support and promotion NBC never gave Scrubs. This is the first season that will be recorded in HD. Most of the upcoming season has already been shot and will air in midseason.

I always disliked Scrubs, I never watched it, never gave it a chance. I dislike Zach Braff as an actor. Once Scrubs hit syndication, it seemed to be on everywhere and my appreciation of John C. McGinley gavem e pause. After one episode, I was hooked. I still dislike Zach Braff, but I enjoy JD and Scrubs. But its not just JD its the whole cast and how they mesh. So after ignoring Scrubs for years, I finally become a fan and find out NBC is only giving it one more season and then the Writer’s Strike happens. Then ABC stepped in and picked the show up to give Lawrence the means to end his show his way. I was very happy with that prospect.

Now hearing that Lawrence and ABC are keen on keeping Scrubs going with a new cast of doctors; you would think I would happy. I’m not. I think its a horrible idea. Scrubs is JD, Turk, Dr Cox, the Janitor, Kelso, Carla, Ted, The Todd, Jordan and its cast of many minor characters. At its heart it is the story of JD and Turk. If this season ends with JD leaving, then I don’t want to see anymore Scrubs. I want to enjoy Scrubs for what it was, not let ABC convince Lawrence to water down the legacy of Scrubs with a bunch of new actors. None of the interns ever caught on to the level of the main cast, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

So Bill Lawrence, please, let Scrubs finish its run the way you have always planned. ER is a terrible, former shell of itself waiting for NBC to put it out of its misery. People still watch it because it was they always watched on Thursday nights. Scrubs is perfect for what it is, don’t continue on for the sake of continuing on. I don’t want to find my self watching a JD-less season of Scrubs going “I remember when this show used to be good, now its just a comedy version of ER”, then changing the channel.
