NBC Cancels Southland Before Second Season Premiere

NBC has canceled Southland, two weeks before the premiere of the show’s second season. Production on the John Wells-produced cop series is being shut down after six episodes. Warner Brothers Television was told by NBC that the show was being canceled by the network. Neither the studio nor NBC would comment on for why the show was halted, but insiders say the dark nature of the cop drama was a factor. NBC said it will do its best to air the six episodes that were already shot and that the quality of the show wasn’t a factor in the decision.

“I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success,” Wells said. “We remain extremely proud of ‘Southland’ and are actively looking for another home for the series.”

Southland was originally slated to debut in its new Friday 9:00 PM/ET time slot during premiere week, but in August, NBC opted to push the start to October 23 and air Dateline NBC in the meantime.

You may not have the comments here, but I have heard several People say that NBC is crazy for canceling Southland. (Me included). I think with what this chanel is airing and removing the line up. You will be the one canceled from viewers choice of the chanel to watch. Did some Big Wig at NBC forget that the Chanel is for viewer pleasure and what they like and not what you decide you will show or pull? Yes a little upset about the show being canceled.

I am very upset that they keep canceling the shows that are good. I was looking forward to Southland coming back and The Unit and they canceled that one also. They need to cancel all the reality show, there’s just too much of it out there it’s so ridiculous! I hope that somebody out there try to save all these good shows that are getting canceled.

I marked October 23 on my calendar so I would not forget to tape what had become my favorite crime/police drama. I was left after six episodes, wanting much, much more. I sincerely hope one of the cable networks pick this up. Without a doubt their ratings will skyrocket. You would think the way more and more families are turning to cable versus the old networks – they’d all get a clue.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why NBC keeps deciding to cancel the good shows, “Life”, “Southland” vs keeping old tired shows that have been kept way past their expiration date. They are obviously out of touch with what is good, interesting, and creative. If these types of shows are too dark for the early time slot, put them in the later time slot. It is no wonder that viewers are turning to the cable networks in record numbers. It’s time NBC starts listening to it’s viewers, are does does that even matter anymore?
