Forest Whitaker has signed on to replace Andre Braugher in a guest role on ER. Busy Philipps has also committed for at least four episodes of the NBC drama.

Whitaker will play a carpenter who comes to the emergency room with a seemingly simple cough, but while he waits, he suffers a stroke that leads to paralysis despite the efforts of Dr. Kovac. The first of his five episodes airs October 19. Philipps will play a Christian intern struggling to become a doctor.

Braugher pulled out because of a scheduling conflict. TV Guide reports that he passed on the ER guest spot for a role in the upcoming Fantanstic Four sequel.

Whitaker, who comes off a memorable season on FX’s cop drama The Shield, next stars as Ugandan tyrant Idi Amin in the feature The Last King of Scotland. Philipps’ credits include the series Love, Inc. and Dawson’s Creek.

ER returns for a 13th season September 21.
