We reported that Tom Selleck was in negotiations to replace James Caan on Las Vegas. The negotiations went well because NBC announced that Emmy Award winning Tom Selleck will return to television series drama when he joins the starring cast of NBC’s Las Vegas (Fridays, 9-10 p.m. ET) next season as a charismatic, self-made billionaire who is surrounded by an air of mystery when he becomes the new owner of the Montecito Resort & Casino.
In addition, James Caan, who has starred as Ed Deline, the Montecito’s surveillance head for four years, will return to the series for one episode in its 2007-08 season premiere after announcing earlier this year that he would be departing the series after its 2007 season finale. “We have been honored and blessed to have had an actor of the magnitude of James Caan for the last four years and we’ve come up with four aces as legendary icon Tom Selleck has agreed to join the cast,” said executive producer Gary Scott Thompson.
Emmy winner Tom Selleck is in discussions to join NBC’s Las Vegas as the fast-paced drama’s new leading man. He would play the smart, powerful, fun-loving new owner of Montecito Resort & Casino, a new character designed to fill the void left by the recent departure of the show’s star James Caan. Vegas, from NBC Universal TV Studio and DreamWorks TV, was picked up for a fifth season in February and is slated to begin production on its order soon. The show also is looking to add a beautiful female concierge in the wake of the departure of co-star Nikki Cox. Josh Duhamel also stars on Vegas, with Molly Sims, James Lesure and Vanessa Marcil rounding out the cast.
Las Vegas is set to return for a fifth season in the fall without two of its stars, James Caan and Nikki Cox. Caan wants to return to movies, while Cox’s departure is said to stem from budget cuts. The show boasts a large ensemble cast and has moved from Mondays to Fridays, where viewership levels are lower.
Caan, Oscar-nominated for his turn as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather, made his first foray into TV series with Las Vegas, in which he plays the surveillance boss at a casino. “I’ve had a wonderful four years, worked with great people and made friends for life working on ‘Las Vegas,’ but I’m eager to return to where my heart is, which is film, and due to the show’s schedule, I missed some great opportunities to do that,” Caan said. “I wish the show and everyone involved with it continued success.”

NBC has renewed its veteran drama series Las Vegas (Fridays, 9-10 p.m. ET) for a fifth season through 2007-08, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment. “The cast and producers have consistently given us what we want from ‘Las Vegas’ - pure entertainment - and we’re looking forward to another fun ride next season with the show,” said Reilly.
This season, Las Vegas is averaging a 2.8 rating, 8 share in adults 18-49 and 9.0 million viewers, to rank #1 in the Friday 9-10 p.m. (ET) hour in 18-49. “Las Vegas” has generated an 8 percent gain versus NBC’s year-ago non-sports rating in the time period. Las Vegas, currently in it’s fourth season, stars James Caan, Josh Duhamel, Molly Sims, Nikki Cox, James Lesure and Vanessa Marcil.
