The ongoing wildfires ravaging Southern California have forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of home owners as well as singed the productions of numerous TV series. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox’s 24 had to rejigger its plan to shoot scenes with Kiefer Sutherland at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro when cast and crew became overwhelmed by drifting smoke. Similarly, Cold Case had to rethink a location shoot when strong winds blew over a set, and ABC’s Big Shots scrapped a cycling sequence in Malibu. FX’s The Riches had to make alternate plans when sheriff’s deputies working traffic control at a Santa Clarita location were pulled to, like, save lives instead, while NCIS needed to replace crew members who stayed at home to ward off the flames.

TV Guide is reporting on news of what role Joe Mantegna will play in the revamped Criminal Mind. He will play Special Agent Rossi, an original member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit who took early retirement to go on book tours, and has now volunteered to return.
Mandy Patinkin will also be returning to the show this fall — but only for one episode (airing October 3), so as to provide some closure for his Gideon character. He’ll only be in one scene, and he’ll essentially be the only one in it. No one in the cast wanted to work opposite him again after he brought production to a standstill by not showing up.
Criminal Minds executive producer Ed Bernero revealed on the Criminal Minds Fanatic Blog that Joe Mantegna will be replacing Mandy Patinkin on the CBS drama. “We are very excited to tell you all that Joe Mantegna is officially joining the cast of Criminal Minds. Thanks for hanging with us, everyone,” he said. It was previously reported that Harvey Keitel was in talks to join the cast, but those talks fell through. Patinkin quit abruptly last month because of what he termed “creative differences.” The show revolving around the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit, returns for a third season in the fall.
