NBC has canceled Southland, two weeks before the premiere of the show’s second season. Production on the John Wells-produced cop series is being shut down after six episodes. Warner Brothers Television was told by NBC that the show was being canceled by the network. Neither the studio nor NBC would comment on for why the show was halted, but insiders say the dark nature of the cop drama was a factor. NBC said it will do its best to air the six episodes that were already shot and that the quality of the show wasn’t a factor in the decision.

ABC has picked up freshman comedies Modern Family, Cougar Town and The Middle for full seasons. The shows have performed strong against significant competition during the latter hour of ABC’s comedy block.
No word yet on back-nine pickups for fellow shows FlashForward, Hank, Eastwick, and The Forgotten.

CBS has given a pilot commitment to an updated version of the classic cop series, Hawaii Five-O. The show comes from writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and CSI: NY executive producer Peter Lenkov. There are little details on the reboot, which chronicled the workings of the fictional Hawaiian state police department led by Steve McGarrett. The original series ran on CBS from 1968-80. Kurtzman and Orci are co-writing the story for the pilot with Lenkov, who will write the script under their supervision. All three are executive producing.

CBS has handed out full season pickups to freshmane drama NCIS: Los Angeles and The Good Wife. Both dramas have performed well for the network after three airings on Tuesdays. NCIS: Los Angeles is the most-watched new show of the fall season, averaging 17.5 million viewers and a 4.1 adults 18-49 rating. While The Good Wife ranks as the second most-watched freshman series, pulling 13.7 million viewers and a 3.0 rating.
Both shows air Tuesday nights and are produced by CBS Studios.
