AMC has renewed Mad Men for a fourth season. The pickup comes on the heels of the show’s third season premiere, which drew a record 4.5 million viewers Aug. 16 as well as critical praise. Creator Matthew Weiner, who garnered four of the five drama series writing nominations, is already on board for a fourth season as part of his wide-ranging deal with AMC and Mad Men producer Lionsgate, inked early this year.

The August 16 premiere of Mad Men drew 4.5 million viewers, shortly after the show received 16 Emmy nominations (including three acting and four writing noms) for its second season. The series won 2008 Emmy drama honors for its freshman year. Set in 1960s New York, the drama follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising.
