ABC has officially renewed Scrubs for a ninth season. The move comes right after ABC Studios signed most of the main cast members who had no deals beyond the current eighth season, the show’s first on ABC after a seven-year run on NBC. ABC and creator Bill Lawrence had said they envision the show continuing with a mix of original cast members and some of the interns introduced this past season.

Zach Braff is set to come back for six episodes to transition the show to its new set-up. Sarah Chalke is also reportedly signed on to come back. Donald Faison, John C. McGinley and Neil Flynn have all closed deals to continue as regulars in second position to their pilots. Faison and Flynn co-star in hot ABC pilots, The Law, which is already unofficially staffing, and The Middle, respectively. McGinley is on CBS’ drama pilot Back. Judy Reyes has not been approached for a deal but may appear as a guest star.

ABC also renewed the 20th-produced midseason comedy Better Off Ted. The single-camera comedy didn’t pop but showed solid retention from its lead-in Scrubs. The two shows are also rumored to continue as a pair next season.

Scrubs and Better Off Ted join recently picked up Cougar Town, Hank, The Middle and Happy Town.

With a 13 episode order for the first season and seemingly no episodes airing past the 7th one. Will those be rolled into the second season or be aired during the summer?
