ABC Claims It Stuck With Invasion Until The End
July 25th, 2006 | 16 Comments | Email | Share | TweetABC stuck with with its SF series Invasion until the very end, with hopes that it would eventually find an audience, but network president Stephen McPherson told SCI FI Wire that it eventually had to cut the series loose after a dramatic drop in audience.
Even with a lead-in like the hit show Lost, Invasion suffered a dramatic downturn in viewers, and ABC decided not to renew the alien mystery series, though it attracted about 10 million viewers a week. McPherson said in an interview at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif., last week that he is aware that some fans were angry about the decision to pull the heavily serialized drama before its storylines were wrapped up.
“The difficult thing about serials is that, you know, a lot of times you have these mysteries that are set up, and there is a loyal fan base, however small sometimes, that is watching,” McPherson said. “It would be great to be able to close up all those mysteries when a show just isn’t working, but in the case of Invasion, we wanted to stick with it. We felt like the work was really good and stuck with it till the end.”
McPherson added: “I hope that viewers will give the next serialized show a shot, but I think it raises the bar for how good serials have to be, because I think people are only going to make an appointment and commitment to a certain amount on the air.”
With all the garbage ABC has and does bring back, how can they honestly say they stuck with Invasion? The show was getting interesting and I was looking forward to a second season. At least give them a chance to wrap it up with a mini-series or made for TV movie. I mean come on, what happened to Larkin?

WTF??????? Leaving a great story hanging with no definitive ending in sight? What the hell does ABC think it’s doing? This series had over 10 MILLION viewers hanging on, and now the mighty ABC decides that’s just not good enough? I hope the turd-brains in management get their asses handed to them! Maybe they should go for a swim…
10 million viewers a week? “Only” that? That’s enormous! It’s more than 3/4 of ABC’s shows get anyway, and surprising considering the treatment ABC gave Invasion; i.e. stopping Invasion mid-season, running re-runs in the middle of the season, stopping the show for a few weeks, picking it up again a few weeks later, not advertising the show or marketing it in any remotely competent way…
Anyone would get put off by that kind of timing. Hell, I’d stop watching a show, no matter how good, if I actually had to chase down episodes.
And Invasion still had 10 million viewers a week and rave reviews from critics and viewers. Wow.
Can anyone say “big mistake”?
I thought Invasion was great!! It had mystery, sci-fi, action, etc.–all the things that make a show great. There should at least be a show to tie-up the loose ends. Even if it is to only show what happened to Larkin.
Thanks.
ABC could at least have finished the series instead of leaving us hanging. I agree that I will stop watching the new ABC series. They won’t be as good as Invasion!
ABC sucked big time in term of NOT having closure to all these serial shows that they pulled …. My friends and I definitely won’t pick up another serial show from ABC fearing they may do the same as Invasion.
I am not happy with the cancellation of Invasion, I would be thrilled if ANY other network would pick it up. I want to know the rest of the story, all of it. I thought it was well written and kept me on the edge of my seat weekly. My whole family watched. Much better than that stupid Lost! I am very disappointed that it did not return. And very impressed by the creativity of Shaun Cassidy!
this is just another disappointed invasion viewer.my 3 kids,my boyfriend and myself could not wait tell it started up again just like the 10 million others you left hanging.i guess we small time amount dont matter to abc big timers.there just out for the big money.i to hope another net work would pick up where they left of and make a great hit.its just not the adult viewers that are disappointed,my kids are13andtwo are 10.
I have been waiting for the second season of INVASION… I would like to know when is going to start again. I can not wait ; is an addictive show and im looking foward for season 2!!!!!!!!
Sadly, Invasion isn’t coming back for another season. I was hoping the DVD sales of season one would be good enough for someone to give this show a second look, but it appears that this show is gone for good, especially since many of its stars have moved on to other shows.
abc stinks they do not know a good series when it jumps up and bites them. I thought the show was awsome and believable. hopefully another station will see a very good series and pick it up.we can only hope and pray.
This is really, really making me angry!!
Here in The Netherlands ( Europe ) i saw the serie from a friend from the US….i know for a fact that people here love this kind of serials……so why cant they sell it to other countries so the money isnt an issue?
Serials like Lost and f.e. Taken were a big hit here!
WE all want invasion season 2. It is an original story so why just quiting it that way!!! We are all tired of that non sense scripts with always the same stories hostages etc. I am not a big fan of aliens but I love this series! I hope that the next year it will continue!
we are getting fed up with good shows getting cancelled without an ending
this one is the most baffling of all
given time it would have been at least a big a success as lost
which i expect also bee cancelled without an ending
the tv companies treat there viewers very shabbily
this decision beggars belief
Invasion and Lost were the only shows my son and I even watched on ABC. We were very angry about just being left hanging and waiting for the next season and to only find out months later…and with much effort…that it was not coming back. Bad enough it was cancelled but they did not even say a thing about it. I’m sure there are still people waiting that still do not know! We will not make the mistake of watching another ABC show.
TRULY ABC IS A BUNCH OF F@CKING IDIOT`S THEY NEED TO FIRE ALL WHO HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH CANCELING THIS GREAT SHOW!! HOPEFULLY SCI-FI CHANNEL WILL PICK IT UP.
Just watched it on DVD again. Can’t believe how stupid ABC was to cancel this. I guess it’s just easier to please the brain dead drooling masses with more Dancing with the has-beens.
