ABC is moving forward with its plans for a male-based Supernanny spinoff says The Hollywood Reporter. The network will air an episode of Supermanny as a back-door pilot in the fall. The spinoff’s format will remain similar to the original, with a child-development expert lending a family in crisis some tough-love guidance. However, instead of professional nanny Jo Frost leading the living room intervention, gruff Chicago child therapist Mike Ruggles will step in. Ruggles’ approach to diffusing family disputes will differ somewhat as well. Ruggles encourages parents to learn how to play with their kids and get to know them.

Valerie Bertinelli is plotting a return to television says Variety. And this time she will be playing a single mother of two. The former One Day at a Time star has signed on to a still-untitled TBS pilot from Sony Pictures Television and writer-executive producer Dave Caplan. Bertinelli will play a woman who struggles to care for two kids and a lumber business after her husband walks out on her. She’ll also have a producer credit on the project.
