Scrubs star Zach Braff and The Office alumnus David Denman, are teaming up for a drama pilot at Fox. Braff is in negotiations to direct and executive produce Saint of Circumstance, in which Denman would play an office worker who quits his dead-end job to become a paramedic on the night shift. The pilot was written by Braff’s brother, Adam. Denman played Roy, the former fiance of receptionist Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) on The Office. There is no start date for the pilot, which is expected to film after the end of the writers strike, which has interrupted Braff’s acting duties on the final season of Scrubs.

Michael Ausiello is reporting that USA is canceling The Dead Zone and The 4400. Both shows wrapped up their respective seasons back in September, neither serving as series finales. In a statement posted on the official 4400 message boards, series creator Scott Peters said, “We’ve had a great time bringing you this story and submersing you in the lives of all these incredible characters. Let me raise my metaphorical glass to you all and thank you for being so loyal and so dedicated. I wish we could go on forever, but the party has come to an end.”
NBC is feeling the pinch of the writers strike. The network has already added Law & Order: CI repeats and the Web original Quarterlife to its midseason slate, now looks to Monk and Psych to help bring fresh programing to the network during the strike reports the Hollywood Reporter. Monk and Psych, both of which return to USA Network with new episodes on Friday, January 11, will get encore Sunday-night showings on NBC beginning in March. The network is also interested in bringing Burn Notice to prime time, but that will require a little negotiation as the show is produced by Fox TV Studios.

Kristin@E!Online is reporting that Journeyman has been closed down. No word yet on whether the series’ final two episodes will air as scheduled next Monday and Wednesday on NBC. Journeyman hasn’t been doing well in the ratings, and the continued writer’s strike surely spelled the end for the show.
ABC has pulled freshman comedy-drama Big Shots, a low-rated male version of Desperate Housewives, from the schedule. The network has pulled the remaining three original episodes of the series starring Michael Vartan, Dylan McDermott, Christopher Titus and Joshua Malina. It will air repeats of the rookie medical drama Private Practice, in the coveted Thursday 10 p.m. slot behind Grey’s Anatomy for the rest of the year. Big Shots was greeted with mixed reviews and cold reception by viewers. Still, given the dearth of original scripted programming as the strike drags into the new year, the networks have tended to prolong the lives of shows that under normal circumstances would have been canceled.
TV Guide is reporting that David E. Kelley has cast Scott Bakula to guest-star in an upcoming episode of Boston Legal as an old boyfriend of Candice Bergen’s Shirley Schmidt who she meets up with at a bar. No word on the exact number of episodes Bakula will appear in, or whether he’ll run into fellow Starfleet captain William Shatner during his stay. This isn’t the first time Bergen and Bakula played a couple. They were also coupled on Bergen’s populer Murphey Brown show.
CBS has greenlit The Amazing Race for a 13th season. The series’ 12th edition is currently airing. CBS planned to air the 12th cycle of the Race next year, but when Viva Laughlin failed, the network opted to sub in the reality race last month. It did well drawing its best premiere ratings since 2005. The show has averaged 12 million viewers in its Sundays at 8 timeslot.
Nickelodeon and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. today announced plans to join forces on a new, 26- episode, CG animated comedy series tentatively titled “The Penguins of Madagascar,” based on the beloved penguin brothers in DreamWorks Animation’s hit feature film, Madagascar ($532 million worldwide gross) and upcoming sequel, Madagascar: The Crate Escape.
The series, which tells the story of a group of penguins who believes it leads an elite strike force from its Central Park Zoo headquarters, will be produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California and is scheduled to premiere on Nick in early 2009. The series will feature the all-new adventures of Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, four penguins who rule the roost at their Central Park Zoo home. While the brothers have their flippers full keeping their multi-species zoo neighborhood happy, at times their secret missions beckon them to venture out onto the busy streets of New York City. Just as the team thinks it has its urban acreage under control, a new neighbor moves in next door: Julien, King of the Lemurs, a party animal with an entourage and an overactive ego.
