Michael Ausiello is reporting that multiple sources connected to the drama say that prospects for a seventh season are looking up. That’s quite a turnaround from what we reported two weeks ago in The Spoiler Roundup that the show was all but canceled. “Everyone was expecting to get shut down,” acknowledges a Jordan insider. “But just last week, NBC started to give indications that the show might return. There’s even been some money allocated for next season.”
Take all of this with a grain of salt. We reported back in February that the season/series finale is said to revolve around a plane crash. Among the passengers: Jordan, Woody, Macy, Bug, Nigel and Kate. In other words, the entire cast. It’s obvious the finale is setup to end the series or move on to another season. I have been getting interested in the show again, so I hope they get another season and bring back Jordan’s dad.
An ABC.com blog entry by series creator Jenny Bicks confirms as much as anything can that Men in Trees’ five unaired Season 1 episodes will not see the light of day until the fall, where they will be used to kick off an extended 27-episode sophomore run. Until then, Bicks says, “We will absolutely be on the air starting in June, with reruns all summer,” though she is reluctant to hint at a time slot. Why did Trees not wrap up its freshman run this spring? Bicks says it speaks not at all to the quality of the unseen episodes, but rather “has everything to do with ABC wanting to use Thursday nights to showcase new shows” such as October Road and Notes from the Underbelly.
SCI FI Channel announced the summer release dates of new and returning series, including a new version of Flash Gordon, the investigative adventure reality series Destination Truth and the third season of Doctor Who. Flash Gordon premieres August 10. It puts a 21st-century spin on the SF classic. SCI FI’s contemporized version stars Eric Johnson. Destination Truth debuts June 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The one-hour weekly series invites viewers along on one man’s search for the truth while investigating stories of the unexplained across the globe. Josh Gates stars. The as-yet-untitled Derren Brown Project premieres July 25 at 10 p.m. The series stars British mentalist Derren Brown. Among returning series, Ghost Hunters comes back June 6 at 9 p.m., Doctor Who July 6 at 9 p.m., Eureka on July 10 and Who Wants to Be a Superhero? July 25 at 9 p.m.
We reported earlier this month that NBC pulled Andy Barker PI after only four episodes, airing the remaining episodes on NBC.com. In a San Francisco Chronicle podcast, Barker creator and late-night talk host Conan O’Brien previews next week’s visit to the Bay Area, and mourns the loss of Andy Richter’s latest sitcom. “It annoyed us,” says Conan, “mainly because I pretty much called NBC on this, and they admitted that, ‘yeah we didn’t really promote it.’”
TV Guide Online is reporting that former General Hospital star Ignacio Serricchio (Diego Alcazar) is back on TV. He starts a three-episode stint on Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Ghost Whisperer on CBS airing Friday, April 27 (8 pm/ET).
TVTattle.com reports that NBC has announced that Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip will return Thursday, May 24, at 10 pm/ET - the day after the May-sweeps rating period closes. Does this spell the end for Studio 60?
Media Week is reporting that FX is expected to renew its newest series, Dirt and The Riches, bringing the number of original dramas on the network’s prime time schedule to six. “We’re really happy with the performance of Dirt and The Riches, and I expect them to return,” said John Landgraf, president and general manager, FX Networks, before an upfront screening of FX’s latest drama, the Glenn Close legal thriller, Damages. Landgraf added that when each show’s cumulative ratings were tallied up, both shows have delivered ratings on a par with older hits like Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck.
In a pre-taped appearance airing on Friday’s installment of The View, bad/sad dad Alec Baldwin stammers his way through an on-air apology to his daughter, Ireland, and, in one rambling instance, expresses a desire to be released from NBC’s 30 Rock, TV’s Extra reports. In response, an NBC rep says, “Alec Baldwin remains an important part of 30 Rock. We look forward to having him continue his role in the show.” Still, Baldwin even talking about ankling the show that remade him a household name is perhaps one sign of how hard his heated custody battle with ex-wife Kim Basinger has hit him. Way to put a man’s family before your ratings and advertising money NBC.
It’s been a short Drive for Fox’s midseason drama, which has been pulled off the schedule after two weeks on the air. For the time being, the serialized drama chronicling an underground cross-country race will be replaced by House repeats in the Monday 8 p.m. slot. Drive received a strong promotional push on Fox’s juggernaut American Idol and was launched with a two-night premiere, a strategy regularly used for the network’s hit serialized drama 24. But Drive never clicked with viewers, and its two low-rated airings on Monday seemed to hurt its leadout, 24, which posted its lowest adults 18-49 rating for an original episode in more than three years. It is not clear when and on what platform the remaining nine episodes of “Drive” will air. Streaming the episodes on Fox.com or offering them as downloads through iTunes are among the possibilities under consideration.
I think this is the best example of the ignorance of those in charge of programming at the networks. The show was on for two weeks and they already canceled it. How are new shows supposed to have time to develop if they are pulled after two weeks? It was a decent show that got really interesting. I am really disappointed that the networks run these serials and build up the suspense and intrigue and then just cancel the show. Poor form Fox.
