Not being able to stand the heat is one thing, but forgetting to turn on the oven? So arrivederci, Giacomo. “Law & Order” mastermind Dick Wolf has teamed up with cable TV network HBO to develop a movie about the plight of American Indians during the 19th century. The HBO Films project is based on the best-selling book “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West,” by Dee Brown.
The nonfiction book, first published in 1970, is an account of how the American Indians were displaced as the United States expanded west. Specifically, the book uses council records, firsthand accounts and other resources to tell the story of “the systematic destruction of the American Indian” during the latter half of the 19th century, including “the battles, massacres and broken treaties that left them demoralized and defeated.”
Wolf is executive producing “Wounded Knee” with Tom Thayer, whose previous credits include the A&E Network movie “Faith of My Fathers” and the USA Network series “Kojak.”
Yves Simoneau, who earned an Emmy nomination for producing the pilot of USA’s “The 4400,” is attached to direct “Wounded Knee,” while Daniel Giat, an Emmy nominee for writing HBO’s “Path to War,” will pen Wolf’s screenplay.
Tribune Broadcasting has licensed syndication rights to the hit CBS comedy Two and a Half Men from Warner Brothers Domestic Television Distribution, with the sitcom’s off-network debut set for fall 2007. The deal covers the entire run of the series, which returns to prime time in the fall for its fourth season on CBS.
The Tribune station group, which licensed “Men” on a cash-plus-barter basis, also will double-run the show on weekdays for the first three years; two additional episodes will air on weekends. The stations will have the right to stream five episodes of the series each week on their own Web sites free to viewers.
“This is the first mega-hit sitcom since ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’ and we got a deal that is according to that kind of show,” Warner Brothers Domestic TV president Dick Robertson said. “They’ve bought the show for the whole network term; this is no short-term deal or barter-only. It’s the exact same template as ‘Friends’ and the first show to be sold like that in a long time.”

NBC’s controversial series The Book Of Daniel was broadcast early in 2006, but before the first episode hit the air it was already canceled in 8 markets: affiliates in Nashville, Little Rock, Terre Haute, Amarillo and four other markets decided not to air the show about the Episcopalian priest who talks to Jesus (in person). While a different Little Rock station decided to pick it up, by the second episode other stations were pulling out, and soon advertisers were as well. By the 4th episode’s airing, NBC had decided to make it the last one and cancel the series.
It was made available for a while via streaming video at NBC.com, but now you’ll be able to get all 8 produced episodes on DVD. Universal is releasing this as a 2-DVD set on September 26th, for around $30.
Everybody Loves Raymond veteran Ray Romano, whose show was U.S. television’s top sitcom when it ended its nine-year CBS run last year, is looking to return to the small screen starring in a new comedy on cable’s HBO.
Talks are under way for the 10-episode single-camera project, now in the early stages of development, that would star Romano as a forty-something billionaire who has six months to live.
Dennis Klein, co-creator of one of HBO’s signature comedies, “The Larry Sanders Show,” is on board to write the show. And the creators of the Fox network’s hit spy thriller, “24,” Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran, supervising as well as executive-producing the new comedy. Romano and Klein also are expected to share executive-producer credits on the limited series.

James Gandolfini, star of HBO’s mob drama “The Sopranos,” is muscling into a salary dispute between two of his castmates and the cable network before production begins on the show’s last batch of episodes.
Gandolfini, whose own bitter contract squabble with HBO three years ago escalated into a court battle before it was settled, is hosting a sit-down this weekend with co-stars Steven Van Zandt and Tony Sirico, according to sources.
With less than two weeks until the scheduled production start of the show’s last eight episodes, Gandolfini is said to be looking to intervene in the network’s standoff with Van Zandt and Sirico over their demands for higher pay.
Only a handful of “Sopranos” actors - including Emmy winners Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli and Vincent Curatola - have closed deals to appear in the final installments of the HBO gangster drama.
